EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
The EYFS Government Framework, along with Development Matters, set out the standards for development, learning and care of children from birth to five. It is important that all children are given the opportunity to experience the best start to their education.
At Billingborough Primary School & Preschool we ensure that all children have the ability to build on the range of the experiences they have had before and go onto become life long learners. Through the expertise and care of our EYFS staff we provide learning experiences of the highest quality. Allowing children to play, learn, progress and flourish in an environment in which they feel cared for, challenged and confident. This prepares them for starting the National Curriculum in Year 1.

At Billingborough Primary School our moto is Take Every Opportunity. In EYFS this is something that we feel passionate about. We ensure that children are given experiences and the ability to use all the opportunities available to active and be the best that they can be.
We create a learning environment that is built around the curriculum along with the needs and interests of the children. We understand the importance of capturing the interests and wonder of young minds and we are all passionate about using the setting, staff, parents and school community to create a life long love of learning for all of our children.
Our curriculum is planned in seven areas of learning and development; all areas are important and inter-connected.
There are three prime areas which are:
Communication and Language Development
Understanding the importance of Communication. Learning how to express yourself and have a back and forth conversation. Communicating within a community of kindness and respect. Understanding how communication is vital in everything we do as we live, love and learn.
Physical Development
Learning and practicing large and small scale movements. Moving with accuracy and care. Refining skills to become safe movers, risk takers and problem solvers.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Learning to recognise and understand feelings. Managing their own needs and follow rules to keep everyone safe and ready to learn. Making friends and managing conflict through love and forgiveness (restorative practice).
There are four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. These specific areas are:
Literacy Development – reading, writing and comprehension
Learning phonemes for graphemes as well as the ability to blend sounds to read words and sentences. Develop a love of reading by reading for pleasure and giving reading meaning through prosody and comprehension. Become confident writers who enjoy writing for different purposes and audiences.
Mathematics
Gaining a deep understanding of the numbers to 10 (including how numbers can be used to describe shapes and measures. Exploring and representing patterns in numbers.
Understanding the World
Understanding past experiences in their lives and people they know. Exploring the natural world around them, and understanding similarities and differences between people, different cultures and religions. To recognise and understand diversity in our community.
Expressive Arts and Design
Create using different tools and materials, explaining how they made their creation. Exploring colours and materials, noticing how they change and are suitable for different purposes. Representing stories in their play. Sing a variety of songs and adapt movement to different kinds of music.
Throughout the year, pupils are assessed against the Early Learning Goals. A final assessment is reported to parents at the end of the year.
Starting School in September?
There will be an opportunity for all children who have been offered a place with us in September 2025 to come to visit school during the Summer term. This allows children to meet their teachers and class. We aim to make starting school a positive experience for all children.
Details of taster sessions will be sent to parents nearer the time. It may also be possible to complete visits to see your child in their pre-school or nursery setting.
